Flight Delay Compensation: When a Claim Service Is Worth It, and When a Free Claim Is Enough

By Aneesh Modi ·

Your flight lands three hours late. You're tired, you want to get home, and the last thing you want is a form on an airline's website. So the money you're owed stays with the airline.

Kiwi notices for you. When your airline's email says your flight was badly delayed or cancelled, Kiwi texts you a couple of hours after you land, tells you what you're likely owed, and sends the claim when you say yes. It's free.

How much you could be owed

For flights covered by the EU rules (Regulation 261/2004), the amount depends on the distance:

Flight distance EU flights UK flights
Up to 1,500 km €250 £220
1,500 to 3,500 km €400 £350
More than 3,500 km €600 £520

From Article 7 of Regulation (EC) 261/2004 and its UK version, read on 31 October 2026. Within the EU, every flight over 1,500 km is in the €400 band.

You're usually covered when you arrive three hours or more late, or your flight is cancelled at short notice, on a flight leaving the EU or the UK, or arriving there on an EU or UK airline. Delays caused by things outside the airline's control, like severe weather, are usually not owed.

Three ways to claim

Claim it yourself. Fill in the airline's form, wait, and follow up if they go quiet. It's free, but it's the part most people never get round to.

Use a claim service. They file it for you and take a share of what you're paid if you win. Worth it when the airline has already refused and the case needs a lawyer.

Let Kiwi do it. Kiwi notices the delay, checks whether it's likely covered and works out the amount, then writes to the airline when you say yes. If the airline goes quiet, Kiwi follows up. There's no fee, and the money goes straight to you.

What it looks like

A couple of hours after you land, never in the middle of the night:

Your flight to Rome landed 3 hours 40 minutes late, so the airline likely owes you €250. Want me to claim it?

You reply "yes". Kiwi sends the claim and tells you when the airline answers.

What Kiwi needs

Just your email. Your airline sends delays and cancellations there, so once it's connected Kiwi sees them without you forwarding anything. Say "connect Gmail" or "connect Outlook" and Kiwi walks you through it.

How to start

Tap Text Kiwi on heykiwi.co and pick iPhone or Android. It opens Messages or WhatsApp with "Hi Kiwi" already written, so you just press send.

Questions people ask

How late does my flight have to be? Usually three hours or more at your final destination, or cancelled at short notice. Kiwi works this out from your airline's emails.

Does Kiwi take a cut? No. Kiwi is free to use, and the compensation is paid to you by the airline.

What if the delay was the weather? Delays outside the airline's control, like severe weather, usually aren't owed. Kiwi only offers to claim when you're likely covered.

What if my flight was cancelled and I was rebooked? You can still be owed money if the new flight gets you there much later than planned. Kiwi checks the new times in the airline's email.
